"Every boy deserves a trained leader."Trained leaders provide a quality, fun-filled program for boys and young men and young women. When leaders understand the why and how of Scouting, they are more effective in their roles and the youth win!
It doesn't matter if you just joined Scouting or have 20 years under your belt as a Scoutmaster -- you can learn something new. Scouting trains all of its adult leaders, as well as its youth leaders.
What Makes a Trained Leader?
- Cub Scout leaders are considered trained when they have completed Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training, This Is Scouting, and the Cub Scout Position-Specific training for their registered position.
- Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained when they have completed Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training, This Is Scouting, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
- Troop committee members are considered trained when they have completed Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training, This Is Scouting, and the Troop Committee Challenge as their Leader Specific training.
- Varsity Scout coaches and assistants are considered trained when they have completed Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training, This Is Scouting, Varsity Coach Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
- Varsity committee members are considered trained when they have completed Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training, This Is Scouting, and Varsity Coach Leader Specific Training.
- Venturing Advisors, associate Advisors, and crew committee members are considered trained when they have completed Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training (included in Venturing Leader Specific), This Is Scouting, and Venturing Leader Specific Training. Advisors and associate Advisors of crews that have an outdoor program should also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
- Skippers, mates, and ship committee members are considered trained when they have completed Youth Protection Training, This Is Scouting, and Sea Scout Adult Leader Training.
- ScoutParent Unit Coordinators are considered trained when they complete ScoutParent Unit Coordinator Fast Start Training, Youth Protection Training, This Is Scouting, and the appropriate committee training for their program area.

What makes a "Trained" leader? A direct contact Scout leader is considered fully trained and entitled to wear the Trained leader emblem when he or she has completed the following training courses and the specific training for the position.
Fast Start Training - Online Learning Center.  Youth Protection Training - Online Learning Center.  This is Scouting - Online Learning Center.  Position Specific Training - Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training is for all Scoutmasters and their assistants. Boy Scout leaders also must complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training to be considered fully trained.
Varsity Scout Coach Leader Specific is for all Varsity Coaches and assistants Coaches. Varsity Coaches and assistant Coaches must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training to be considered fully trained.
